ALIEN IMMIGRATION.

The Minister of Immigration informed the Onehunga Borough Council, in a letter read at their meeting last night, he has ample power to impose an effecttive restriction on the number of aliens or race aliens, including Asiatics, entering New Zealand for permanent residence, under section 5 of the Immigration Restriction Amepdment Act, passed in 1020. So far as he is aware, no other country has a more effective means of controlling such immigration. The Minister informed the council that ten years ago there were 13 Indians and 205 Chinese admitted to New Zealand, while last year the numbers were 49 and 58. So far as Chinese are concerned the Government is not issuing any permits for permanent residence to persons of this nationality during the present year.
