SUDDEN DEATH.
PLAYER COLLAPSES ON HOCKEY FIELD. (By Telegraph.—Press Assoolntion.) CARTERTON, Monday. The annual hockey fixture between combined school teams of Dalefield and Matarawa and the Hataitai-Wellington schools and the combined committees, which were being played at Dalefield on Saturday afternoon, came to ?. sudden end through a sad incident which cast a gloom over the whole district. Mr. Herbert Henry Knowlea, a well-known dairy farmer, of Dalefield, of the combined committee team, suddenly collapsed while playing, and expired within 15 minutes. Dr. Young was immediately summoned, but upon arrival pronounced life extinct. On preparing to take the field for the match. the deceased appeared in the best of health, and entered the game full of eagerness, remarking in the dressing room that he was out to win, and during the short I period of the game he played strenuously. The late Mr. Knowles, who was ,">4 years of age, was born at Matarawa, and for the last 30 years has resided at Dalefield. He leaves a widow and a \ family of three. An inquest will be held I to-day.
The visiting team, which under ordinary circumstances would have remained in the district over the week-end as guests of the Dalefield and Matarawa residents, returned to Wellington by the evening train, the arrangements for their entertainment being cancelled.
