SHIELDING AN ACCOMPLICE.
JUDGE'S STRONG COMMENT.
SENTENCE ON YOUTH DEFERRED,
Having pleaded guilty to a charge of breaking, entering and theft, Harold "Waterloo Pell (Mr. Allan Moody) ap-. peared before Mr. o Justice Stringer in the' Supreme Court this morning for sentence,
Mr. Moody stated that the prisoner was only 18 years of age and that he had never been in trouble before. He had been out of work for some time and because of that had essayed to steal, Ht felt that if the accused was given a chance he would make good. There was a certain amount of pigheadedness on the part of the prigoner, in that there was a suggestion of there being an accomplice, But the youth would not tell wlm) it was. It might ba in liis interest if he were not sent to gaol.
His Honor said he was satisfied that the accused bore a good, character, but unless he agreed to mttke a full confession he was not prepared to grant pro* bat ion. If he asked for the clemency of the court it must be expected that he would give the name of his accomplice. A remand of a week would be granted so that the accused could reflect an the matter. Apart from that ■his Honor said he would bo only too pleased to g> ve consideration to counsel's ulea.
Mr. Moody eald he had told the accused to be frank. He would suggest that the case be adjourned for a month, and let the prisoner come up for sentence. The other person might be brought to book in the mean-time. The Rev, lasper Calder had informed counsel that the boy could be saved. • His Honor; The first step to salvation is frank confession. He can chooie for himself, but there will be no. half , measures. It was agreed that the parties confer, and after an absence of about 20 minutes, Mr. Moody announced that the accused had given some statement to the Rev. Jasper Colder.
His Honor remanded the accused uniil July 7, on bail as before.
Mr. Campbell, probation officer, suggested that it would have a better effect if the prisoner was kept in gaol,
His Honor said that if he did not make a- clean breast of the matter he would have plenty of time to get used to gaol,
