TECHNICAL TRAINING.
PROPOSED JUNIOR SCHOOLS.
LIKELIHOOD OF OPPOSITION.
A proposal to establish junior technical schools was briefly discussed at a meeting of the Board of Managers of the Seddon Memorial Technical Coli lege yesterday afternoon. I The director in a report said that he | was a keen supporter of junior high j schools. He recognised that they were I doing excellent work, but he felt that I the bias of the junior high schools would ■ not be towards the industrial side. The jmain object of the junior technical I school system was to ensure the proper j development of the city's system of j technical education, and was on the lines of the junior technical schools in Victoria, where they had been a great success. By the next year, or the following year, they might owing to the increasing demand for accommodation, to refuse entrance to a large number of students. He suggested that it might be advisable to follow the Australian experience and "raise the standard of entrance to the college. The chairman (Mr. H. S. W. King) said that the report had been circulated amongst the members, and arrangements had been made for the Director of Education to visit Auckland and discuss the mattei with the Board of Managers. Mr. J. MePhail: It is primarily to kill the junior high school movement. The Chairman: It seems to be in the interests of all concerned. Mr. MePhail: It is not in the interests of the junior high schools nor the pupils themselves. The Chairman: We have not got far enough to discuss that. Mr. MePhail: Personally lam here as a member of the Education Board, and I have their interests to look after. The Chairman: I don't think that they will object. Mr. MePhail: I think that there will be objections.
