"THE ONLY STRONG PARTY."
ITS ABSOLUTE FREEDOM. SIR JOSEPH'S LITTLE JOKE. (By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. Sir Joseph Ward (Invercargill) took his seat in the House yesterday afternoon on the front bench Opposition seat alongside Mr. H. Atmore (Nelson). A ripple of laughter ran round the Chamber when Sir Joseph, in the course of a characteristic speech in support of Mr. Statham'e nomination for the Speakership, declared that he was hie own leader, that he was free to appoint his own -whips, and represented the only party in the House that did not require a caucus to determine its movements and policy. "I am the only independent strong party in the House," said Sir Joseph, smiling. . ' Mr. Atmore interjected: "You are not alone, you know." Sir Joseph Ward: "Of course the hon. member must speak for himself." (Renewed laughter.)
