THE STORIED PAST.

AN INTER-COLLEGIATE EPIC. SHEEN—AND A FAMOUS GAME. The inclusion of Sheen in the New Zealand team brings'back memories of a stirring struggle in the ihter-college tournament of 1922 (says the New Zealand "Times.") He was then playing at first five-eighths for Christ's C&!ege. Wellington College and Wanganui met on the first day. and in the last ten minutes the local boys snatched a victory through two tries by Hanan. Wanganui next met Christ's and were never in the hunt. Sheen and Talbot played like men possessed, and their side rattled up over 80 points. What were Wellington's chances? ■

There was a record crowd at the college for the final game. The people arrived principally to see the Christ's College backs play. A betting man 'could get up to 30 points in. In the meantime, however, Wellington had been lying low. Their coach, Mr. T. Brodie, and Dr. McEvedy devised a scheme to counter the great fiveeighths, Sheen and Talbot. They changed the formation of the scrum. Instead of the ordinary 2-3-2, they made it 3-2-1, with two wing- forwards, Mackenzie, who now plays for 'Varsity, and Renner, w.ho is in the Hutt team. What a game! Christ's hooked the ball, and as soon as their five-eighths had it the two wing-forwards, always straining at the leash, pounced on them. The tackling was hard and low, and as deadly as a battery of machineguns. Time after time the ball would fly from the half to the wing, but each man bit the dust. However, the hero of the day was Sheen. His partner, Talbot, flinched a little under the big strain, but Sheen showed tremendous heart." He received a pass near the Wellington twenty-five, and with a lightning corkscrew run paralysed the opposition. He darted through the Wellington five-eighths like a flash, and went straight for" the fullbaok. Grenfell made a brilliant attempt to tackle, but Sheen swerved and scored wide out. Talbot failed to goal. Christ's College won the match. A potted goal from Talbot's boot made them seven points up. Wellington's winger, Tait, now playing for Athletic, scored a try in the closing stages of the game. Sheen was the outstanding player on the field, and incidentally out of those thirty players he has been the only one so far to come up to All Black standard. '—^"'

N.Z.R.U. MEETING. THE ALL BLACKS' CAPTAIN. REAPPOINTMENT OF PORTER. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Wednesday. The Management Committee of the New Zealand Rugby Union met to-night. Mr. S. Dean presiding. The chairman said he thought New Zealand should be adequately represented at the next Olympic Games. An appeal for support was made by the Olympic Council, and it was decided to reply that the union would give all the help it could. A letter was received from the Hawke's Bay Union asking for a match against the All Blacks to tour Australia. The matter will be considered, but at present it is not thought that it will be practicable to play such a match. It was decided that the captain and vicecaptain of the All Black team to tour Australia should unveil the memorial to the late Mr. Robert ("Dickie") McGregor in Sydney. .-. The memorial is being erected by New Zealand footballers and admirers over his grave there. The South Canterbury Union complained that the South Island selectors had made no effort to gain first hand knowledge of the players nominated by their union. The letter was received. The secretary of the French Rugby Union wrote stating that he would be able to advise definite acceptance of the invitation to France to send a team to tour New Zealand next season in a month's time. Rugby is evidently booming in Samoa. A letter received from the union there stated that over 200 players had been engaged in the competitions there this season. Their teams had beaten representatives from warships, and they were looking forward in future to a tour in New Zealand, and to play their Maori cousins. Mr. H. S. Leith. of Wellington, was appointed manager of the New Zealand team to tour Australia. C. G. Porter was appointed captain, and M. F. Nicholls was appointed vice-captain. MAORI SHIELD MATCH.
