COLLIERY FLOODED.

HIKURANGI MINERS IDLE. About 130 men are idle owing to the flooding of the Hikurangi Coal Company's mine at Whangarei. Attempts have been made to overcome the trouble with the steam pumping plant at the mine, and a tank was used in the shaft cage to assist by baling the water. Unfortunately the cage went out of order when at the bottom of the shaft, which restricted the lifting of the water to the steam pump. In order to cope with the difficulty, and also provide more pumping plant for the future, the directors of the company are arranging for the purchase in Australia of two large electrical pumps. It will probably be three weeks before these come to hand and are installed at the mine, when it is expected that four days' pumping should clear the remaining water and permit of operations being resumed. Meanwhile the miners will be out of work until the water is lifted.
