INSPECTION OF THE WRECK. STRIPPING OF GEAR COMMENCED. iWireless from "Star" Reporter.! s.s. MANAIA, this day. All night the Rimu cruised off Slipper Island, rolling gently in a slight swell. Tiiis morning found her about a mile from the scene of tho wreck. As day dawned tlie Manaia's white funnel and upper works could be seen against the dark outline of the island. Slowly the Rimu worked shorewards within 100 yards of the wreck, the anchor being dropped in ten fathoms of water. The Manaia was listed about -> decrees to port and had her bow fast on" a ledge of rock 200 yards from the j =hore The sea was now calm, and at 7 a.m. a boat put off for the stranded
On boarding the Manaia it appeared that probably the ship would be a total wreck, the engine room being flooded to the top of the boilers. In both fore and aft holds the cargo was floating, while the water had risen partly up the stairway leadin. down to the main
saloon. After breakfast on the Rimu, t'.»o boatloads of men x\cre transferred to the stricken ship, aud the work of stripping the ct,-.. %\a* commenced.
