IMMIGRATION POLICY.
OFFICIAL CLAMS. NOT CAUSING UNEMPLOYMENT. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) NEW PLYMOUTH, this day. I Addressing the Chamber of Commerce last night Mr. H. D. Thomson. Underj Secretary for Immigration, gave an emphatic contradiction to statement* that a large number of Government immigrants have returned to England. j and that they were swelling local unemployed. He asserted that not per cent had returned to England, an , ! of rhe ! large number introduced during :he la-c j few weeks every one was sent ro pmplori ment or to a. friend, a bone r>s p*>r ren; I going to the country and the balance to i the town?, the latter beinr artisans or j tradesmen. j Mr. Thomson also expressed satisfaction with the working of *h<> chamber's scheme of introducing public school boys, ! which had proved ;i marked success. FT» saw no reason why the Dominion should reduce it- immigrants below 10,000 p,--r J annum, who could be readily absorbed, but he would not at present advocate increasing the quota.
