STATE ADVANCES.
(To the Editor.) Sir.—"Practical" has made some useful suggestions re the State Advances Department assisting to reduce the ranks of the unemployed. It seems to be a habit with this branch of the Government Service to loosen its purse string and give prodigally for a few months and then to close down again to recover. Up to the end of March builders were fully occupied building homes under advances made by the Department, and the allied trades, painting, plumbing joinery, draining, electricians, and many others" were going full time. However, since March very few applications for loans have been granted, and it is certaiL that within the next few weeks there will be a very considerable slacking off in the building trade, and many skilled hands in that and allied industries will be out of work. A steady issue of loans would be infinitely preferable to the spasmodic activities of the Department and wou'.d help consider\o:y to stabilise the position respecting employment in one of the most important trades in the country.—l am, etc..
