Black (private secretary) arrived at Rotorua on Friday and made visits of inspection. On Saturday the Minister received deputations from the Borough and County Councils and the Chamber of Commerce. On Saturday night, Mr. F. F. Hockly, M.P., introduced further deputations, when Cr. T. McDowell asked for a new pavilion at the baths and the extension of the Blue Bath. The Minister replied sympathetically. He said he knew the work was required, nnd if the money (£50.000) were available it would be proceeded with. The Mayor Mr. C. H. Clinkard) drew attention to the state of the roads, and asked for a camping site. The Minister promised to do what he could in the matter. Cr. J. N. McLean asked for legislation providing for a surcharge on visitors, as was done in some spas in Europe, also for the assistance of the Department in the proposed carnival. Tbe Minister replied that legislation for such a surcharge was new to him, and he would consult the Crown law officers on the point.

Mr. R. B. Nesbitt (chairman of the Chamber of Commerce) stressed the question of better roading. saying that the Mamaku Road was impassable, and the Atiamuri Road nearly as bad.

The Minister replied that he knew by experience the state of the roads, and he would help in any way that he could.
