OUTCRT IN CHURCHES.
DECISION OPPOSED
There was an outcry in several of the churches yesterday, against the granting of the license. At St. David's Presbyterian Church, in the morning, a resolution was passed by the congregation, protesting vigorously against the grant, and saying that it was not in accord with the wishes of the community, which returned the present Licensing Committee again to power in the faith that on the question it would maintain its previous attitude. The congregation expressed the hope that the Government would see that the principles of democracy were not flouted, and that in this matter the mind of the people of .he city would be given effect to.
Prior to the commencement of his address last evening at the Majestic Theatre, the Rev, Lionel B. Fletcher eaid j that thousands of people would be shocked to learn of the committee's decision. Members of the committee, which was r lected as much by the people Of the churches as any other section of the community knew they were returned by those who were opposed to the granting of the license, and had deliberately gone back on the understanding When the time came, the .speaker hoped that the people would endeavour to right the wrong that, bad been done.
In a eermon at the Methodist Collegiate Church, Grafton Road, the Rev. Dr. H. Kanston expressed indignation at the action of the committee. A resolution of protest was carried unanimously.
In a resolution passed by the congregation of the West Street Church of Christ, it \.as stated that the granting of the license was against the weight of evidence, and was opposed to the interests of waterfront industries and workers.
Similar protests 'were made in other churches, and by the Auckland City Salvation Arm; Corps.
