AUSTRALIA 105.

NORTH OF ENGLAND MATCH.

ENDS IN A DRAW. 3 FOR 110 IN SECOND STRIKE. (By Cable.—Press Association. —Copyright.) (Received 2.30 p.m.) LONDON, June 4. The match between Australia and the North of England ended in a draw. The ; visitors were at sea to the bowling of j Root, who took seven wickets for 42, the whole side being out for the poor score of 105. Carr declared the North's second innings closed with the 1 wicket down for 77, but the Australians had no difficulty in playing out time, scoring 110 for three wickets, when stumps were drawn. When the match ,was resumed to-day the Australians had lost three wickets for 34 (Taylor 12, Mailey 10) being the' not outs. Jupp and Larwood opened the attack. Mailey received a ball on his pads in attempting to turn it to leg, and was out lbw. Jupp was bowling short. He | was displaced after one over oy Root, | who bowled on the leg theory. He had ; Taylor in difficulties when the latter ! attempted to plaj' the balls, but more often Taylor elected to leave them alone. Larwood on a harder wicket developed a pace which was probably faster than that of Gregory. He kept a good length and had Macartney beaten three times in succession. Taylor was never comfortable facing Root. He attempted to drive one to the boundary, but it was held at mid-on. The Australians had not experienced Root before. His line of attack was new to most of them. He is a medium fast bowler, a consistently good length and pitches the balls mostly on the leg stump leg. He breaks in such a way that the batsmen must play him. There is always a risk of being bowled in try- , ing to drive and the tendency is to play "rock," await a loose one. Root, who is no novice, knows the batsmen are sure to try glances or let the ball hit the bat and risk cocking up the easy catches, therefore he has four fieldsmen close up on the leg side, namely, one at "silly" deep, one at fine, one at square and one just outside square leg. Every now and then he sends a ball off the stump and then a similar one with a off-break. Thus the batsmen attempting to cut and drive often find that the ball has whipped back and taken the leg stump, or else they put it up in the slips. "Root has never bowled better, though undoubtedly the wicket helped him," eaye Colonel Philip Trevor in the "Daily Telegraph." "The sun dried the top. Never have I seen any side, to say nothing of a great batting side, so powerless to deal with hm. One after another they waggled the bat at the I>an, usually uncertain which way to waggle it.
