faces were suddenly wreathed in smiles as the news of the calling off of the strike winged its way throughout the country, though there was no sign of undue jubilation, on account of the l public composure which has character|i Led the past days and especially the 'i efficiency of the emergency measures | which reached the apex of perfection i to-day. \i Even the weather was in kindly mood ! and thousands of people proceeded to I work in tolerable comfort. | The arrivals at Victoria Station were | attracted by chalk notices stating: "No more volunteers wanted." Skelton staffs in factories and workshops immediately busied themselves in anticipation of normal working tomorrow. Within an hour of the announcement machinery was humming in several newspaper offices.— (A. and N.Z.)
