TAKAPUNA TRANSPORT.
• • - TRAMWAYS OR BUSES. QUESTION OL ELECTRIFICATION. A question of much public, interest at Takapuna at the present time is that of transport facilities, the Takapuna Tramways and Ferry Company having recently cancelled the agreement hy which "the company was to electrify its scheme in return for a monopoly of the passenger traffic. Speaking at a meeting of the Takapuna Council last evening the Mayor (Mr. J. D. Morison) said he understood that the company had not yet aban- I doned its scheme. Regulations concern- ' ing the issuing of motor bus licenses had now been gazetted, and the council could,, if it so desired, grant the I monopoly .to the tramway company, j The Prime Minister had said that the : question was in "the hands of the Takapuna ratepayers themselves, and it was for them to decide whether the borough was to have electric tramways. The majority of the residents, said the Mayor, were in favour of electrification. He was of the opinion that anything .approaching a unanimous resolution at a public meeting would settle the question. The council wanted to know whether the ratepayers approved of the enforcement of the regulations. Mr. A. H. Wilkie thought that if the tramway was to have a monopoly the council would require strong representation -on the board of directors. •After lengthy discussion it was decided- that a sub-committee be appointed to confer with the borough solicitor re the interpretation of certain clauses in the regulations and to fix a suitable date for a public meeting of ratepayers to discuss the question of transport.
