GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
PAPAKLTS- TOWN BOARD.
The much-discussed topic of the paving of the Great South Road in permanent material was advanced a step further at the meeting of the Papakura Town Board on Monday evening. The board's engineer (Mr. A. Greville Walker) supplied estimates for concreting an 18ft width with 4ft shoulders. In the business area provision was made for the reconstruction and bituminous sealing of the areas between the kerbing and the edge of the 18ft strip of concrete, also for the construction of footpaths. In referring to the fact that it would be necessary to raise something like £15,500, the chairman (Rev. \Y. C. Wood) expressed the opinion that the whole-hearted efforts of the board would be necessary once its attitude bad been decided; it would be a case of "go for it."
Mr. Weir thought that the original outlay covering the cost of concrete was absolute economy. A road of different material would require the whole of the interest and sinking fund of the loan to maintain it. "Auckland would stop where the concrete stopped." Mr. McCali said that the step had to be taken, and lie fell confident that the loan would be carried. Mr. Tnlry considered that concrete was (jtiitc tne most satisfactory material and he advised pushing the matter. Air. Mi'lnlcc urged the advisability of going abend with the scheme, and favoured fetil'inittin;; proposals to the ratcpavcrs nt an annua] meeting to be held on' May 31. A motion to tlii* effect was carried unanimously. .i number of leading residents are to be a?kcd to confer with the board to evolve a rapid plan of campaign.
