MT. ROSKIX.Ii BOAD BOARD. ELECTION OF CHAIRMAN. A meeting of the Mount Roskili Road j Board was held last night, -when there were , present Messrs. J. J. Preston, T. S. Lamont, ; L. A Tozer, S. Scarborough, W. W. Kerr, | E. Brewer and A. Belcher. j As the first business, Mr. G. E. Tansley ; asked for the nomination of his successor j as chairman. Mr. J. J. Preston was unanimously elected to the position ana was congratulated by Mr. Tansley on his appointment. Before leaving the chair, Jir. | Tansley thanked the board for their co-op-eration during his long term of office and j all the board's staff for their uniform s courtesy to himself and Mr. E. J. Herd, the other retiring member. | Mr. Preston thanked the members for the j honour conferred upon him, ana on his j motion a hearty vote of thanks was passed ; to the retiring members, Messrs. Tansley; and Herd, for their services to the district as members of the Road Boara. The same to be placed on the minutes. Mr W. J. Jordan, the member for Manukau, was also present and joined with the board in their appreciation of the good work done by the retiring members. The j two new members, Messrs. A. Belcher and L A. Tozer, were welcomed to the board by the chairman, and also Mr. W. W. Kerr upon his re-election. Appointments.—The . following appointments were made :—Deputy chairman, Mr. S. Scarborough; Finance Committee, the chairman and Messrs. E. Brewer, T. S. Lamont, A. Belcher and L. A. Tozer; Works Committee, the chairman and Messrs. E. Brewer, T. S. LAmont, S. Scarborough and W. W. Kerr; to sign cheques, the chairman and any one member of the board; Local Bodies' Association, Messrs. E. Brewer and W. W. Kerr. Fire Board. —The chairman moved and it •was . agreed that the necessary steps be taken to have Mount Roskili Road District declared a fire district within the meaning of the Fire Brigades Act, 1908, and its amendments. Sole Commissioner.—The board accepted the offer of the Public Trustee to act as the sole commissioner for the board in regard to the sinking funds on the board's loans of £1250 and £4800 raised for the purpose of water supply extension. The clerk, Mr. J. Warren, reported that funds were in hand to pay the sinking funds on both loan accounts. Piggeries.—The sanitary inspector reported on the unsatisfactory state of several piggeries in the district and suggested that a by-law be passed to regulate them. The matter is to be dealt with, at a special meeting of the board. Drainage.—lt was resolved to hold a special meeting of the board to deal with the engineer's report on the question of draining the western portion of Mount Roskili. Building Permits.—The building Inspector reported that twelve permits for new buildings had been granted during the fortnight of a total value of £0304. There are now 44 dwellings In course of erection in the district. Light at Greenwood's Comer. —The chairman reported that the electric light' at Greenwood's Comer was not satisfactory to the residents in the Mount Roskili area. He had interviewed the chairman, of the One Tree Hill Road Board, Mr. R. G. Clark, who had agreed to recommend his board to take over the sole maintenance of the light if Mount Roskili erected and maintained another one in the vicinity. It was decided to notify the One Tree Hill Roard Board that Mount Hoskill will erect another lamp on a post near Walker's shop and maintain it, and that no further contributions will be made by Mount Roskili to the existing lamp. Scoria Pit.—After hearing a report on the- scoria pit by the engineer, Mr. J, D, Whitmore, it was decided that the board meet him at the pit to see what further can be done for the, successful working of the pit. Contract Cancelled. —Messrs. Tozer and Tozer wrote cancelling their contract with the board re house numbering in the Victory, Islington and Dominion Estates. The board agreed to this. Speedometers.—At the engineer's maggestlon the board agreed to purchase speedometers to be placed on the board's motor trucks to keep a check on the miles covered by them. Invitation accepted.—The secretary of the Roskili East Ratepayers Association, Mr. K. J. Barnes, invited the board to attend a meeting of ratepayers to consider the question of forming the district into a borough, and of adopting the unimproved system of valuation. The writer stated that the clerk of the board, Mr. J. Warren, had agreed to address the meeting on the subjects, provided that the board will agree to his doing so. The invitation was accepted and permission given to Mr Warren to comply with' the wishes of the association.

MOBTHCOTE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

The fortnightly meeting of the Xorthcole Borough Council was held last evening. The Mayor, Mr. C. A. 'Deuxberry, presided, I and Councillors J. B. Tonar, P. J. Maxwell, B. W. B. Herrick, A. R. Shutps, C. Bunker, A. J. Lennoo, C. A. Clark, A. W. Smith and J. F. Jackson were also present • "Water.—lt was reported by the Waterworks engineer that the April consumption of water had been 2,405,500 gallons. The Takapuna Borough Council had fixed a fire hydrant, to the Northeote eight-inch main, the improvement of the water pressure in Kauri Glen Road was deferred until the estimates were under consideration. It was stated that five residents were now being supplied off a one-inch pipe. The estimate I for a li-inch pipe was £47, and for a. four- I inch main for the full length/ £350 New Buildings.—Five permits for new buildings were issued. Heavy Traffic.—Ths council again appointed the Auckland City Council the licensing authority for -heavy traffic and collection of the fees therefor, the basis of distribution to be 50 per cent population and 50 per cent capital value. The town clerk of Papakura remitted the sum of 19/1 for heavy traffic fees, and it was stated the proportion collected by the city for the March quarter was £71 18/11. Wharf Lighting.—lt was decided to suggest to the North Shore member of the Auckland Harbour Board, Mr. John Henderson, that application should be made to the Waltemata Power Board for lighting the Northcote wharf and waiting rooms by electricity. The board. Intimated that the electric lines would be continued to the wharf If a sufficient number pf lights was applied for. Hospital Block.—A report was received from the surveyor engaged to make recommendations regarding the .straightening of the Lake Road in the subdivision of the hospital block. These were ordered to be embodied in a letter to the Auckland Hospital Board. Belle Vue Avenue.—Letters in connection with Belle ■ "Vue Avenue were deferred for consideration until the receipt of the report from the engineer regarding this thoroughj fare. One ratepayer stated that he had added £5000 in improvements to the dlsI trict during the past two years, and added i that he would advance the money himself I if lack of funds was the only present barrier Ito the work. Petrol Tax.—On the motion of Messrs Smith and Tonar, the principle of a petrol tax was affirmed. Public Meeting.—The advisability of holding a public meeting of ratepayers at an early date was approved.
