TWENTY-THREE LIVES LOST.
EXPLOSION IN TEXAS. DISASTER IN HARBOUR. NEW YORK, April 12. A terrific explosion occurred to-day aboard the oil-tank steamer Gulf of Venezuela, in the harbour at Port Arthur, Texas. Twenty-three lives were lost and more than 20 other persons were injured. Seven members of the ship's crew of 39 men are missing, and it is believed some of them are among the dead. A number of dock workers are also missing. The effects of the explosion at one time threatened to involve other vessels in the harbour. The disaster was caused by an explosion of gasoline due to a leakage from the tanks, which became ignited. It occurred in the early hours of the morning, while most of the crew of the vessel were asleep. The steamer, which carried 100,000 gallons of gasoline, was blown from the wharf in a sheet of flame. — (Reuter.)
