(Received 11 a.m.) MADRID, April 12. An earthquake destroyed Horta, the capital of Fayal Island*in the Azores. Thousands of the people are homeless.— (A. and N.Z.) The Azores are a group of islands in the Atlantic, 930 miles west of the coast of Portugal. They are all volcanic. The only tolerably safe harbour has been at itorta, on Fayal Island. Volcanic outbursts have shaken the Archipelago in 1501, 1638, 1710 aud 1.41. The area o£ Fayal Island is 60 square miles, and the population 22,000. liurta itself has 7000 inhabitants. RECORDED IN NEW YORK. (Received 9.30 a.m.) NEW YORK, April 12. A severe earthquake, believed to be 10,000 miles away, perhaps off the south-west coast of Australia, was recorded by local seismographs between 3 a.m. and 5.20 on Monday.— (A. aud N.Z.) RECORDED IN SUVA. ißeceived 1 p.m.) SUVA, this day. The local seismograph recorded a disturbance at 7.30 Monday evening. The disturbance was at its zenith at 7.45 and lasted two hours.— (A. and N.Z.)
