OBITUARY.
LATE MR. JOSEPH RICKIT. One of the most interesting nguree in Taupo has been removed by the death of Mr. Joseph Rickit, where he has lived for over 50 years. Born in England in 1552, Mr. Rickit came to New Zealand with his parents in the ship Cashmere in 1861. They settled in Otahuhu, and Mr. Rickit, senior, was one ol the first butchers in that district. When 17 years of age young Rickit joined the Armed Constabulary and went with the force to Taupo. Upon the force being disbanded Mr. Rickif, with Mr. Joseph Gallagher, set up storekeeping , in Taupo. Mr. Rickit owned a bullock team and dray mil earned n-n'l-"o f-r»« Tnrvin ■■■> to Taupo, the trip taking three •weeki each way with i>\o tun o» uuar, a g.etu contrast to what he saw in later year] when the motor lorry became the chiet means of transport. In 1870 he married Taima Te Ngahue, a Maori lady of high rank iri the Tohurangi tribe, who went through the Tarawera eruption. The deceased is survived by the widow, four sons and six daughters and 28 grandchildren. The late Mr. Rickit was a member of a number of local bodies. He will be buried on Thursday.
