CHEAP MEALS.
fTo the Editor.) . Sir, —In an article in the " Star " of March. 29 concerning the Sailors' Home, ;as a proprietor of one of the 1/ restaur- ; ants so scathingly referred to by the matron of the above home, I wisii to state the quality and quantity of meals served in such restaurants are equal to any meal in town at any of the various 1/6 places, and the percentage of returns is not 1 per cent or anywhere near. I am enclosing a copy of three meals for a day, which you will see are varie-1 and substantial, and I challenge the matron of the home to publish the fare supplied by her at an increase of 50 per cent :in price and compare the two. As to rooms, the Sailors' Home pays no rent and taxes. and is endowed by the late Mr. Costley to help sailors to reasonably cheap board and lodging, so is very favourably situated. Yet you can get a bed at any bpardinghouse or apartmenthouse for 2/ and a room for 10/ or at most 12/6, including sheets, , pillowslip,' soap and bedding. The Sailors'- Home, placed as it is, should be much cheaper, at least not more than 1/6 per bed or 25/ per week board and lodging. lam quite prepared to substantiate anything I have written here. —I am,' etc., CHEAP RESTAURANT KEEPER. [The menus submitted show, in the case of dinner, soup, choice of four entrees, six hot joints, and five different sweets. Breakfast and lunch are on the same, liberal scale. : —Ed.]
