C.J.C. MEETING

GRAND KNIGHT WINS EASTER.

COMMEXDATIOX THE STAKES.

(By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) CHRISTCHUSCH, Monday. Delightful weather was experienced for

the opening of the C.J.C. autumn meeting at Riccarton to-flay and the recent heavy rains had left the course in excellent order. The attendance -was truly representative, and North Island horses competed in each of the events and enjoyed more than a fair measure of success. The totalisator investments amounted to

£50,153, against £59.770 for the corresponding day last year. A Two Horse Race. The field for the Hurdle Race numbered two starters, Projector being withdrawn | at the eleventh hour. Early in the morning he had run half a mile in 50s, but then bolted for about two miles, and this did him no good. The race itself calls for little comment, as Many Colours always appeared to have the better of matters, and won very easily. Kapuna did not display the dash of his Oamaru running. Commendation Easily. The doubt as to whether Commendation would behave himself at the post or not ■was the reason why other norses in the Champagne Stakes were fairly well backed. The L'iniond gelding has not given any trouble since he has been at Riccarton, and to-day was as quiet as could be wished at the barrier, ami hepped out smartly when the word was given, winning in a common canter. lie looked a bit big in condition, but the class opposed to him never troubled him. Limerick, a lanky black colt by Limontl, who shows a lot of promise of developing into a good Derby candidate, went very well and finished second, but it appeared that Scrip might have been second had his rider been a bit moie energetic. Of the remainder, Front Rank showed most promise, but she is certainly not in the winner's class. Rosenor, which also claimed an engage- | ment in the Great Easter, was scratched ■for the Autumn Plate, and in his absence the betting was good and well distributed. At the finish, Mr. R. A. McKenzie's filly, Piuthair, came with a good run and won most decisively. She was well handled by the Wellington apprentice, T. Green, and will win again shortly. She is a half-sister to Kovar and Clandhu. Corinthic was in front till 20 yards from the post, but faded out badly. Gay Queen, one of the outsiders of the field, led most of the way, and only the last furlong troubled her. Mime did not gel a good passage, and may do better. The Russley Plate. Young Lochinvar made those opposed to him in 'the Kussley Plate look like commoners, for he was early in front and won very easily at the finish. He is a big raking gelding, and though he has not done much racing up to the present, he knows his business and should still further Alyson ran a good race, though having no chance with the winner. Miss Flighty only gained third place on account of the others tiring. The Big Event. Seventeen horses faced the barrier in the Great Easter Handicap, the bracketed horses Grand Knight, Royal Divorce, and Fool's Paradise being made a good favourite. Grand Knight was the only one of the three to draw a good position at the barrier, while the other pair were well on the outside. Set Pail, on the rails, was the first to be noticed, but Licinius then raced to the front and led by a length round the top turn, with Civility, Baldowa, Grand Knight, and Fool's Paradise handy. Baldowa looked a winner a hundred yards from the post, but Civility made a dash and appeared a winner. Then Grand Knight came with an all-conquering run and quickly silenced the opposition of Civility. A truly good horse goes down as the winner "of the Great Easter for 1920, for he had to carry a T)ig weight at a fast clip and did his work like a tradesman. I Baklowa and Set Sail each went great ' races, but the first and second place fillers were certaintly the best horses on I the day. They were also first and second lin the order of favouritism, and both I have been coupled with horses in the i Great Autumn Handicap. Carnot ran a I surprisingly good race, and when a more ' accomplished horseman rides him he must be seriously considered, no matter I how good the class. J A Big Dividend. Booster, which is trained at Greymouth, won anfi paid a big dividend in the Girncraek Handicap, and West I Coasters had a royal win. Ridden by j the Xorth Island apprentice, T. Green, Ihe was well handled, coming with a I good run in the straight to win in the last few strides. By the manner ir which he finished he appears to be a .-seful sort. He was bred in Southland by Mr. A. B. Armour, his dam Pretty Face being bred by Sir Geo. Clifford. The favourite. Minotus, was never dangerous and Serotina faded out in the last bit Receipt went a rattling good race intc second place, but Gold Brick, which jumped out very smartly, and soon had £ 1 good lead, was not favoured with the i best of horsemanship. Mr. G. D. Green wood's filly, Precious, was well backed but was never dangerous. Los Ambus Wins Well. The Soekburn Handicap was notablf for the appearance of several Autumi Handicap candidates, including Golc i Light and Count Cavour. Both wer« well beaten by Los Ambus, which, gettiuj away slowly, soon ra ninto to front and led for the rest of the journey. Tomnrj Dodd went a good race in second place and Count Cavour and Gold, Light wer( both prominent in the straight. i There was a rattling good race in th< I Courtney Welter, Footfall winning aftei I a great tussle with Centrepiece anc Zaragoza. It was a really good bettinj race, Zaragoza having a very slight cal in the betting. With the exception o: j Bonskirl, all the runners had a cb.ane< ', in the straight. It was a fitting enc to a good day's sport. Later results are:— I GREAT EASTER HANDICAP. Seven furlongs. I—Grand Knight—Morris : I 2 —Civility .... 1 '. !
