Catcall ran disappointingly in the Great Northern Oaks on Saturday, but yesterday he was a much improved horse, finishing third in the Great Northern St. Leger Stakes. His run on the first day evidently improved him.
Danae, belonging to Mr. H. R. Mackenzie, won the Great Northern Oaks nicely on Saturday. This filly has shown promise on the track?, and previous iO winning the Oaks she had been placed ill a race at the last Wellington meeting. Danae should win further good races.
Archibald has been racing well over hurdles since ho was put to the game this season, and in his efforts >? looked as though, he would stay on. In the Brighton Hurdle race on Saturday he cleared away from the field and won in most attractive fashion. He should be a good proposition during the winter.
Star Stranger did not show to advantage in the President's Handicap on the first day of the Auckland meeting, finishing well back. Yesterday he was produced in the Great Xorthern St. Leger and after being ridden in behind the field went up crossing the top. Mask took him on in the straight and a great race saw the latter stay on sufEeiently well to beat Star Stranger by a neck.
Shirley has won in each of her last three starts. She won the City Handicap at Wellington last January, running the six furlongs in 1.12, beating Cawnpore, Licinius, Black Cat and others. She was not raced again till the Napier Park meetiijg last month and annexed the Flying Handicap. Shirley was not etarted on the first clay of the Ellerslie meeting, but yesterday was produced in the Huia Handicap. She was quickly in front and stayed there to win nicely.
Sun Up did not perform too well at Ellerslie the previous time he was here, and it was thought by many that he was not partial to the right-handed going. He looked a ball of muscle, and, beginning quickly he was with Reremoana the "whole way, just getting beaten. Yesterday he was beaten in a six-fur-long sprint by Shirley, but the latter is a pretty good sprinter for she downed a useful field at Wellington last January. Sun Up will be in demand the next time he is stepped out.
Mask won a couple of highweight handicaps at Wellington last Januar3, and by the way he finished in them he appeared as though he would see out a further distance. In the St. Leger he was with Star Stranger in the rear for a good portion of the way, tut then went up handy to the leaders. Star Stranger came round the field as they ran round the bend into the straight, but then Mask came through, and getting the better of Star Stranger, stayed on to get the verdict.
The performance of Reremoana in the Easter Handicap at Ellerslie on Saturday stamps the son of Hallowmas as one of the best handicap performers up to a mile that has been seen in this country for quite a long while. Reremoana registered his second" successive victory in this event and he did his work like a tradesman. He was soon in front and stayed there, and to run a mile in 1.37 3-5* with 9.11, was indeed a sterling performance. Xonette carried this weight as a three-year-old in 1902 and won.
Lysander won the Champagne Stakts on Saturday in most convincing style. He was soon in front and was never headed. Jot King was slow to move, but was soon rushed up to a handy position. However, the effort took too much out of hini, and he was done with in the straight. Even if he had got away with Lysander, it is difficult to say whether he would have beaten the son of Absurd. Lysander has now started on six occasions for three —the A.R.C. Welcome Stakes, the Great Northern Foal Stakes and the Great Northern Champagne Stakes. Hn was beaten out of a place in the A-K.C. Royal Stakes, won by Joy King, but was tot quite right on that occasion.
