-RIVER BED RISING. PROSPECT FOR CHRISTCHURCH. (By Telegraph.—Press .435001811011.) CHRISTCHURCH, this day. "Unless something is done and that speedily Christchurch will lie in serious danger from the Waimakariri River within a definite and limited period."— This is the opinion of Mr. 1". (.'. Hay, engineer to the River Trust. The bed of the present stream is filling up, declares Mr. Hay, and within about 40 years it will give the river sufficient height to go over the bank, to breakthrough to the south branch south of McLean's Island, and to have Christchurch at its mercy.
