TROTTING.
WHEEL AND TRACK , NOTES. (By ORION.) FIXTURES. March 27—Wellington Trotting Club. April 3. 7—N.Z. Metropolitan Trottln*r Club. April 3, s—Hftwera Trotting- Club. ~ .April 17—ElleSmere Trottihg Club. April 17—Cambridge T.C. (Alexandra Park). April 22—Walmaie Trotting Club. A coincidence in connection with the Thames meeting on Saturday was that there were two events on the programme for straightout trotters and in each the winner was Roe Bell, while "Amberite filled the role of runner-up. Roe Bell as one of R. A. McMillan's team at Tama--here and has more than-, once demonstrated his ability l to trot well". Rockburn is putting up a good record and has now won three races on end, This does not happen often in handicap events, hut Rockburn has not yet been set a severe task. However, in the Hawera Cup Mr. Edwards has placed Mr. Brideson's pacer on 4.35, and he will have to he a good *ort to win off.that mark, as there are some fair horses he js giving starts to. The defeats of Beauty Spot at the Thames meeting were two severe blows to backers. On the form shown, at the Waikato meeting at Epsom it looked good business supporting A. McMillan's pacer at any price, but, as often happens in trotting, a break in each race settled Beauty Spot's chance of winning. In one race she did not leavV'the hiark right, and in her second start, when up with Our Pirate in the lead, she broke, leaving Our Pirate to go on and win easily. Beauty Spot returned a short price for second place. When Master Councillor went 2.15 for a mile at the Waikato -meeting, his owner decided to try him in longer races and on Saturday stepped the son of [Councillor out in the Thames Cup. Mas- [ ter Councillor had often tried .to win a 'two miles event," but invariably he tired over the last couple of furlongs. However, on Saturday, from a 4.38 mark, or 72yds behind, he beat all hut Rockburn, the latter winning by a length. As usual, Master Councillor was at a great price, and though 'beaten, hia supporters handled a useful dividend. THE TROTTING CHAMPIONSHIP. GREAT BINGEN BEATEN. RUN-OFF OF- DEAtf-HEAT. i (By Cable:—Press Copyright. 1 (Received 1.2.30. p-m.) PERTH,- this/day. The run-off of the-dead-heat between the West Australian trotter, Taraire, and the New Zealander, Great Bingen, for the trotting championship of Australasia over a distance of a mile and a-half, resulted in a win for Taraire after a brilliant race by a yard and a-half,'the time being 3m 20s.—(A. and N.Z.y ... . While a victory for Great Bingen would have been weldomed by New Zealanders, the fact that he went under to another New Zealander in Taraire is good news. Taraire, which is a roan pacer, was bred in New Zealand, and, carrying the colours of the Christchurch sportsman, Mr. R. M. Morten, won for himself a place with the best-pacers ..of the Dominion. He, won over all distances, hut it* was as 1 a stayer.-that he did best, and some..fine performances went down to his credit. When the trotting authorities at Perth last year decided to stage an Australasian Championship, Mr. Morten, owner of Taraire, and Mr. Trengrove, owner of Great Hope, two horses trained by. J. decided to he represented, and the two horses mentioned were sent to Perth in charge of J. Bryce. Great" Hope proved successful, while Taraire raced prominently. After the carnival Taraire found a new owner in Mr. J. Shaw, who bought the roan horse from Mr. Morten. The price at which Taraire changed ownership was not given out, but it may be assumed Mr. Morten would not part with his favourite unless the amount was substantial. Just as Taraire was a good winner in New Zealand, so also has he been for his .Perth owner. At a .big carnival at Perth during the Christmas and New Year holidays, Taraire won the New Year Handicap, one of the star items, and now he has gone one better and captured the championship. Kola Girl is the idol of the trotting public at Perth, but Taraire is a great favourite, and we can take it that when he downed Great Bingen in the deciding test last night, the result would call up much enthusiasm.
