CONDITIONS NOT OBSERVED.
" PROBATION CANNOT BE ABUSED." TWO .MONTHS' IMPRISONMENT. Through becoming too friendly with Bacchus. Victor John McDuff (38)" found himself in trouble again this morning. On Friday last he was , before the Court for being intoxicated while in charge of a motor car in Queen Street, when he was sentenced to 21 days' imprisonment —this being his third offence for driving cars when not sober. Arising out of the same set of circumstances he was this morning charged with failing to comply with the terms and conditions of his release on probation. The probation officer (Mr. W. J. Campbell) said that MoDuff was at present on probation. One of the restrictions imposed by the magistrate was that he should abstain from taking intoxicating liquor. In August last he was charged with assault, but at that time he was not charged with a breach of his probation. However, his lapse this time could not be overlooked.
"It's a nice way to observe the conditions of your probation. McDiifT."' said the magistrate. Mr. J. \Y. Poynron. "It will have to be known generally that probation cannot be abused in this way. You will- be sentenced to a further two months' imprisonment."
