Overtoil, Edward Francis I Bradley (31), could not. make up his i mind as to whether he would be dealt with summarily by the magistrate or go before the Supreme Court. He hung his head and was deep in thought when Mr. Hunt told him he had better make up his mind about the matter. "'What bail can I get':" asked Bradley. I Mr. Hunt: Oh, that depends on the J circumstances of the case. What's in : the case sergeant? Sergeant Turner said that Mr. Overton, the licensee of the British Hotel, hung tip his coat, and afterwards missed it. On looking outside he saw accused going down the street with it. Bradley asked for a remand for a couple of days. And would bail be granted. Mr. Hunt: Yes, remanded to February 1. Bail £25. WHAT A PATROLMAN SAW. While making his rounds just after •"> o'clock last evening, one of the AuekI land Harbour Board's patrolmen ob- | served two Maoris in a motor truck on J one of the wharves. One man was I sitting at the wheel, and the other was J beside him. The truck was heading j towards the town end of the wharf, and lit appeared to the patrolman that the two were going to drive oif. ; As n result of this Walter Bayliss (23 i and John Smith (22), alias John , Maliuiki. appeared each charged with J unlawfully converting to their own use ; a motor trut-k valued at £LSO. i Bayliss told Mr. Hunt that a sailor off the Matangi started the engine, and ] moved the truck a little way along the wharf. As the sailor could not put it back in its original position, Bayliss said he was in the act of replacing the ' truck when the patrolman came along. ' The police stated that both men had : done little work recently, and had been hanging about the waterfront. Each was given seven days' imprisonment.
