DARKEST NEW YORK.

) SKYSCRAPERS AND SMOKE. I I 1 MORE LIKE LONDON EVERY [ DAY. t NEW YORK, January 2S. ; The city of Now York, once famous for the clearness of its atmosphere, is ' now undercoincr a radical change. Owins to the coalniinors' strike in ' Pennsylvania. householders and the ■ owners of office buildings and factories have gradually been forced to use bituminous coal, as the stocks of anthracite coal were exhausted. A climax has now been reached. New York is beginning to resemble London. For the greater part of the day the city is now under a black blanket. Lights burn all day in offices 3 which are usually lighted by the sun. 3 Many citizens who do not appreciate ' the cause have complained of fog, and 5 1 clouds of smoke rolling from various factories have caused numerous inquiries • to be made at the newspaper offices ref garding the location of the "big fire." 3 The Fir<* Department and Weather a Bureau are also being besieged with questioners. The Health Department is now investigating, and will endeavour to relieve the situation. In the meantime the tops of skyscrapers are frequently invisible from the streets below.— (A. and N.Z.)
