SUZANNE'S SCALP.
HELEN WILLS SETS OUT. iFron? Our Own Correspondent.) SAN FRANCISCO, December 30. Crowds blocked traffic on Oakland pier to-night when Mies Helen Wills, the young American tennis star, left for France, where she expects to conquer Mile. Suzanne Lenglen, the world's champion. Helen doesn't exactly say it that way, but the tennis experts, writing in leading newspapers, are hopeful, despite the warning of Tilden that she hardly has a chance. Helen's mother saw to it that she departed with a "grand gesture.' , A leadinc magazine published very creditable pencil sketches executed by the champion, to show that she ha.s artistic as well as tennis talent. Early this afternoon Helen played as a man' in a striotly men's doubles tournament. She and her partner won comfortably against two experienced male players. Miss Wills defeated Miss Kitty McKane in the final of the U.S. women s singles championship in August, thus retaining the title three years in succession. She went to England in 10-24. keen to meet Suzanne at Wimbledon. .But Suzanne retired '"under doctors' orders" after a hard struggle with Miss Ryan, formerly of California, in which the result wad two sets to one in favour of the Frenchwoman. la America, in 1021, she also retired, ill, after Mrs. Mallory had beaten her o—2 in the first set. America was unkind to Suzanne on that occasion, suggesting that she was afraid to continue. And now Mi.?s Will? goes out. liko a knight errant, to clay the French dragon.
