THE NEW CRUISER.
We do not endorse completely the policy of a local navy when we say that the cruiser Diomede, which arrived here to-day, is a welcome addition to the force. Our local navy is a very different matter from what it was when the Chatham was its pride. The Chatham was obsolete, but both the Dunedin and the Diomede are ships of a type considered first-class in the Navy. New Zealand is therefore maintaining a force which has two units that are fit to do anything demanded of light cruisers, and New Zealanders are entitled to feel that they are doing more for Imperial defence. Another important point is that the presence of two cruisers enables the authorities to set and maintain a higher standard in training. One ship will be pitted against the other, and the two will manoeuvre together. The welcome to the Diomede does not seem to have been ecstatic, but we hope that the ship's complement will be made to feel at home, and that officers and men will consider that they have changed hemispheres but not hearts and traditions.
