AN OUTRAGEOUS "HOLD-UP."
Tlie action of the crew of the Matangi in refusing to sail with a man who is a member of the union and has been in the ship for three years is utterly indefensible, and if shipping companies give way on such questions they might just as well admit the right of the men to operate "job control" in full measure. The men's action is selfish and tyrannical. There has been so much of this sort of thing in Australia recently—in some cases the owners have been astonishingly weak —that it is impossible not to suspect a connection between these and the present trouble in Auckland. If tlie shipping companies wish to check this interference with the lawful occasions of of ships and travellers, they must stand firm. They owe this to their own selfrespect, the rights of the public, and the men round whom the controversy revolves. It is possible to buy peace too dearly.
