EATEN BY ANTS.
« OLD MAN'S DEATH. WAXDERED IX BUSH. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDXEY, January 15. With his face eaten away by soldier ants, police found an old man named James Balmont (75) unconscious in the ; bush near Port Hacking on Wednesday : afternoon. His face was resting on the top of an ants' nest. He had wandered away from his home shortly before breakfast, intending to gather some firewood. He did not return and by lunch time his relatives became anxious and informed the police. With residents search parties were organised. and one of these found Balmont in a secluded gully. Apparently he had tripped over a rock, fallen heavily, striking his head on another rock, and rolled on to an ants' nest. The insects, which are a particularly vicious species, attacked him at once, and when found his face was terribly swollen. He was rushed to hospital and admitted in a serious condition. He died yes- ; terday from his injuries.
