AUSTRIAN MEDICAL MIGRANTS. Some months ago new? was received that the Austrian authorities desired to learn under what legal conditions Austrian medical men were permitted to practise as doctors in the.British Empire, and what openings, if any, existed for them. In the communication received here the questions applied to the position in New Zealand and Samoa. The matter was subsequently taken up by the Wellington branch of the British Medical Association, and at a meeting of the council a resolution, viewing with alarm the suggestion that Austrian doctor should be allowed to practise in New Zealand was passed. Such an introduction was considered contrary to the Medical Practitioners Act of New Zealand, and it was pointed out that there was no reciprocity as regarded medical practice between the Dominion and Austria. A reply has been forwarded to the Austrian' authorities, that Austrian medical practitioners holding Austrian medical qualifications are at present ineligible for registration in New Zealand, and. therefore, cannot enter this country for the purpose of practising their profession. The position iii regard to Samoa is identically the same.
