A shattering detonation, due to the explosion of gas and petrol aroused the residents of the Moabit district of Berlin early this morning. A four-storeyed house collapsed like a pack of cards, burying the occupants under eight feet of debris. The whole street was a scene of wild destruction. A motor car was hurled some distance away and smashed to pieces. All the windows in the neighbourhood were broken, the window frames hanging on the walls. Fire brigades working feverishly were threatened every moment by further collapses of loosened masonry. The explosion was caused by an escape of gas which became ignited, the flames spreading to a chandler's shop, where it Ee t fire to a barrel of benzine. The house was inhabited by twentyfive families. Forty persons have been extricated from the ruins. Of these five are dead and 20 seriously injured.— (Reuter.)
