NOTES ON THE PLAY. For the commencement of the Pairs Competition the conditions were difficult for accurate play. The greens were keen but a stiff wind was troublesome. A heavy thunderstorm in the afternoon interrupted the third round, which will be completed this morning. S Hardley (West End, Auckland), was set a hard task to catch Wade (British party). In the first round the English pair had scored on each of the first seven heads, being 14 up. Hardley scored 10 in the next four heads. Three to Wade gave him another nice lead, but Hardley played strongly, and six heads later was two up. 21—19. The game was one of changing fortunes for Wade then scored three and four, leaving Hardley to score six on the last head to win. The Aucklander scored only two. Hardley had a comfortable win over Sewell (Kaituna), winning all the way. and finishing eight up at the j 20th head. Forrester, of Caversham, got five on Casey of Carlton. on the last head, but was "still a point in arrears. In the second game the Carlton pair beat Orchard (Christehurch), 20—lo. Bremner (West End), 24, had a narrow scrape home against Anderson (Ro=lvn), 21. He had the game safe, and'at the 18th head was well in front, ■M to 11 It « as not all over for Bremner as the home pair outplayed them, scoring oue, four and five on the i last three heads.. Pilkington, Hamilton, and Preece, Lin wood, had a fairly even go in the first round, and at the 16th head the score stood 18—14 in the former's favour. A single and a six to the leaders materially altered the complexion of the game., which ended at the 20th head.

tastier (St. Clair) had the measure of Clarke (Rocky Xook) throughout the piece, and although the latter made a strong effort in the latter stages of the games the -final scores read: Fastier 22. Clarke 17.

The green appeared to be drawing a little too keenly for Walker (Auckland), who went down rather badly to Cooper (Linwood). Walker led till the third head, and the tally read 4—l in his favour, but a rather lucky six put the Lin-wood, pair in the lead, which they retained until the 11th bead. Walker then drew all round the jack, and

at the conclusion of the head lay four, - which brought him level. The 14th head saw Cooper again take the mat and . retain it for the next four heads. One by Walker followed, and in the two final .heads Linwood registered four, rt thus taking the game with the scores v standing 22 —15. In the second game the Auckland pair * ! beat Carswell, by 22 to 20. Par- •' ! kor skipped against Carswell, and was 10 to 0 on the sixth head. It was even play to the 18th, the score then being 20—15. On the 10th head Cars- ", well got three, the 20th Parker lay ! two, but Carswe.j trailed and lay one. Parker missed a drive. Carswell drew a-, toucher, and lay two. Parker played a perfect last bowl and displaced the shot - howl for two. The Taieri man. wanting five to win, found the hurdle too much ■■ for one head only, getting three and . losing by two. The tussle between Carswell (Taieri) and Henaghan l-viledonian), proved a close ono, and its ultimate result caused some surprise to the few Taieri supporters. From beginning to end the Caledonian pairs' drawing was machinelike, and they left few openings for the veteran C&raTvell. Although some of his running shots were good he was playing a little heavier than usual, and . altogether failed to reproduce his brilliant form of Tuesday last. Campbell, of Cromwell, got a seven on to Koefoed and P. White, of St. ■ Helier's on the third head and kept that lead all the way. to win by 22—16. The second game, against Gray, of Kelburn, who won eight games in the rinks, was a very even one. The score was 15 all on the 19th head. White got two singles on the last two heads and won 17 to 15. The other Hardley Brothers (West End), played on the Balmac-ewan green. They first met Jones, of Eoslyn, who ran" away with the first game, the brothers "retiring at 23—16. Mitchell (Sydenham), won the second game 23—15. Wright (St. Kelier's), who made such a fine showing in the singles and ririk competitions, made a bad start in the pairs. Doherty (Kelburn), winning the initial game, 30—10. Wright, however, won his second game against Kennedy (Otago), 22 —15.
