TEACHERS' SUMMER SCHOOL
THE CAMP AT CAMBRIDGE. . A LARGE ATTENDANCE. The schoolteachers' summer school, the first to be hold hi the North Island, following on the experiment at Auck- " land last year, commences at Cambridge to-day, and will extend over a period of' ten days. Teachers from all parts of the island to the number of 200 have been arriving since Saturday afternoon.'; and this evening they will be accorded; an official welcome in the Town Hall. * Professor Mllner will deliver the open-. ing lecture. With the splendid lecturing staff that,' has been secured teachers will be pro-' vided with a line opportunity of broad- } ening their outlook from an educational; viewpoint, and this is the primary object j, of the school and camp. The topics that will be dealt with by the several pro-, fessors and lecturers will be ' not only J, on education but also on everyday, topics. All lectures are open, the pub- ; lie being accorded a hearty welcome, and there are evidences that the Cambridge people will readily avail them?olves of this opportunity to hear some of the foremost educationalists of the
The school will be in camp form, the' lady teachers being provided with sleep-; ing accommodation at the district, school, and the men are under canvas at-* Victoria Square. The several professors", have been billeted with private familiei.; . Gamp routine will include lectures: and . instruction classes each morning,* while, the afternoons will be devoted" to sports and general entertainment." The town's facilities in this direction' have been placed at the disposal of the visitors. Motor trips are also being arranged by the local organising committee to Arapuni and Horahora, besides a river trip to the Narrows. The lecturing staff includes: Professor Shelly (director of the school), .professor of Canterbury College; Dr.' Marshall, geologist; Dr. E. Marsden, Assistant-Director of Education; Professor Milner, C.M.G., M.A., rector Waitaki Boys' High School; Dr. Buck, D.5.0.; and Mr. Varley Hudson, musical director of the school. ■ The people of Cambridge are alive to the value of the school to the district, and are heartily co-operating, with a view to the school being accredited a distinct success If such it proves to be, it is more than likely that the movement will be established as an annual affair.
