The pacing gelding Brutus has gone j into R. Humphrey's stable to be trained I in future. * I At the Manaivatu Trotting Club's j meeting the principal event is the Mana-1 watu Trotting Cup of 30050v3. with a 4.48 limit. - I Mr. F. C. Hoa-arth's horses, Harold Burwood, Wairua, Bright Bell, Try ■Soon, and a maiden pacer, have left J. H. Wilson's stable, and in future will be trained at Addington by S. Gallacher. The "Wellington sporteman, Mr. J. R. McKenzie, haa won £6440 in stakes this season, made up as follows: Great Bingen £4015, Acron £1150, Silk Tkread £605, Real the Great £275. Frisco Beau £271, Glendora £70, and Nyallo £.54. Dolly Dillon, the winner of the New Zealand Trotting Gold Cup on Saturday, was for a long time trained by O. E. Hooper, but this season her owner, Mr. T. G. Fox, took charge of her. She was driven to victory on Saturday W P. Riddle. Nelson Tasker was backed down to a very short price in the Speedaway Handicap at Wellington. He settled his prospects by breaking up badly at the start, but once he hit hia straps and settled down he paced so well that he must have had a great chance had he gone away properly. The three-year-old Xative Chief had every chance to win the Gold Cup. He is not a good beginner as a Tule, but on this occasion he went off the mark like a veteran and led till a furlong from home, when he compounded, and finished just outside a place. Mrs. Arnott'3 veteran Huon Grattan gave nothing a chance when he won the Sharpe Handicap at the Hutt on Saturday. He was not greatly favoured by backers, but he was *n- front early and led throughout. He went the eight furlongs in 2.16 2-5 off a 2.18 mark, which is a fair slice to cut off his handicap.
It is the general opinion that Countryman was unlucky in not winning- the Gold Cup. and that he -was a good thing beaten. It appears there was no blacksmith on the course, and the horse could not be shod in the way it was desired. In the race he was forced to cover a lot of extra ground and lost many lengths, but in the straight he finished on brilliantly, failing by a length to reach Dolly Dillon.
