WALSH-JOHNSON FUSS.

BOTH HELD IN CUSTODY. UNIONS AT LOGGERHEADS. SOME RESIST IDLENESS. (By Cable.— Press Association.—Copyright.) (Received 12.30 p.m.) SYDNEY, this day. j In announcing; that the Court reserved! judgment in the deportation case, the Chief Justice refused an application for 1 the release of Walsh and' Johnson on Wail, stating the decision will be delivjered as speedily as possible. A definite split in the LaUmr movement is threatened on the deportation issue. Dissension is rampant in the j ranks of industrialists on the question of whether action should be taken to resist deportation. A special meeting of the transport group flouted the direction of the State Labour Council ■ that a mass stopwork meeting of members of all unions affiliated witli the group should be called for to-day. The proposal was rejected, the delegates declining to carry out the ' council's order. This action will be discussed at a meeting of the council to-night, when attempts will be made to override the group's decision, and compel the unions comprising the group to "carry out the wishes of the council. The defiant attitude of the group is expected to induce some members of the Labour Council to urge enforcement of the clause in the council's constitxition providing for the suspension or expulsion of refractory unions. An interesting- feature of the dispute is that the seamen have led a section that favours inaction with reference to , deportation, their principal reason being : that the allied unions are not prepared I to give any guarantees of support.— (A. and" X.Z. Cable.) The Labour Council is appealing to I the unions for funds to carry on the deportation ease objections, as there is not enough money in hand to continue , another day. j
