■\VHEKE IS TIIIS NEW ZEALAND?
Matters in connection wth the visit of the American athletes, -Tackson Scholz and Lloyd ITahn, were dealt with at a meeting of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association on Monday. The secretary (Mr. V. Hugo) reported that guarantees had been received us follows: Gisborne, £o0; Wellington, £100; Otago, £7-5; Hawera, £30; Uanterbury. £7.V, total, There was outBtanding £100 each from Auckland and Wellington. Scholz. he said, had left San Francisco fur Honolulu on November 25, and would connect wiUi the .Niagara on December 2;i, joinintj Hahn, who leaves Vancouver on December 10. Their passage money, £201. hail been advanced by 3lr. C. G. Krogness. who was being reimbursed by the X.Z.A.A.-i.
liio weretary read a letter from Mr. Xi, (-. Krogness, sen., who is acting for New Zealand in ..merica, in which Mr. Krogness said he had received a telegram from Mr. Frederick W. Kubien, of the Amateur Athletic Union, as follows: "Permission grunted Hahn and Scholz compete New Zealand. Expense money must be forwarded Amateur — ..aletic Union and dispensed by same." Mr. Krogness' letter proceeded as follows: "Considering it as an unusual demand, which could be interpreted as a distrust of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association and as a slight, and feeling that this should not be accepted without a protest, I telegraphed Rublen as follow?: 'New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association will render to Amateur Athletic Union of America detailed statement of all expenses of Scholz and Hahn to be incurred on their proposed tour to, in, and from New Zealand, and it will be complete and correct. If they go, Scholz and Hahn will sail as planned on steamer owned in New Zealand, where passage was arranged. I personally advance necessary expenses to American athletes to embarkation point, and New Zealand reimburses mc. No international amateur athletic governing body, not even _ the Amateur Athletic Union of America, until to-day, has ever suggested, required, or demanded that Now Zealand Amateur Athletic Association must forward money to it for it alone to dispense for expenses of athletes of its jurisdiction invited to New Zealand. New Zealand always paid, never repudiated, every legitimate expense of visiting athletes, as many American athletes can testify. Why this sudden distrust ?' " The secretary also stated that the Amateur Athletic Union of America had cabled the A.A.U. of Australia stating that the A.A.U. of America had approved of the tour of BoHolz and Hahn subject to the observance of the international rule of expense money. "They are rather weak in geography in New York," remarked the chairman when the cable was read. The council decided to write thanking Mr. Krogaess, sen., for his efforts on Ndw Zealand's 'behalf, and also to advise the A.A.U. of -America through .\ew Zealand's representative that there was DO need for the A.A.U. of America to write to Australia, as New Zealand was a separate nation competing at the Olympic Games.
The secretary reported receiving several photographs of Scholz. and Hahn tp bo used for publicity purposes. Further details of the tour were 4'.er -ferred to the Itinerary Committee. ~- Later Mr. Heenan said he would give notice of motion at next meeting that New Zealand should be separately afliliated to the International Amateur Athletic Federation.
