GRAMMAR SCHOOL CONCERT.
I • 1 A concert or unusual Interest will bo given in the assembly hall of the Auckland Grammar School, Mountain Road, on Wednesday next, at 8 p.m.,, uj the Grammar School Old Boys' LIUD. i Several of Auckland's leading artists will i contribute to trie programme, and pupiia i rrom the Girls' Grammar Schools, as well iaa the boys' schools, will take part, pupils . from the Auckland girls' school giving a display of physical drill, and girls from the Epsom school a number or schoolsongrs. Thus all lour schools will assist. i Although there are still four months of tbe financial year to run, the Wellington City Council's monthly returns have revealed that the calls for money for ordinary maintenance works have been so very heavy that it has become necessary to go slow in all matters involving expenditure outside bare necessities. Tins state of affairs (says the "Dominion") was not altogether unanticipated, as the past winter was one of tiie worst and Avettcst on record. The superabundance of rain played havoc with the streets., Many cases arc on record where streets bad " been repaired at considerable expense, but before the new metal and blinding bad become compacted With . traffic rainstorms almost nullified the work done, and in some instances washed it completely away. There were several I heavy slips to contend with, and a good 'deal of drainage work, all of which ate ] into the ordinary vote for this class of , work. A report on the position generally . has been prepared and will be considered by the Finance Committee of the council at a special meeting.
