AMATEUR ATHLETICS.
MR V. HUGO RESIGNS POST. DISPUTE OVER AMERICAN TOUR. The council of the New Zealand Amateur Athletic Association met on Monday night, Mr. A. T. Davies presiding. Otago Centre notified the re-election of Mr. J. Taylor as its delegate. The North Island cross-country championship has been abandoned this year, owing to lack of entries. A letter was received from Mr. V. Hugo, tendering his resignation as secretary-treasurer of the association, and requesting that a successor should be appointed immediately. Mr. Hugo wrote that the position! that had arisen in connection with the | proposed American tour was one that! could not obtain were the sole object of the tour the benefit of amateur athletics. He realised that, owing to the remarks of two gentlemen who will be in office for the ensuing year, he did not possess their confidence. . . . .He considered that he had been discredited not only in New Zealand but also abroad. There was a long and heated discussion regarding the secretary's letter, several members declaring that Mr. Hugo had acted under a misapprehension. Mr. Davies said that in his opinion it would not be in the best interests of the council for Mr. Hugo to resign. Mr. Hugo had done a vast amount of work in the interests of amateur athletics, and the council on the whole had every confidence in him as a secretary. H9 thought Mr. Hugo should reconsider his decision. Other members present also referred to Mr. Hugo's capabilities as secretary of the council, and expressed the desire that he should remain in his position. Mr. Guy: "I was very much surprised to learn that Mr. Hugo had tendered his resignation. I take it that lam the-member of the council referred to in Mr. Hugo's letter, but I emphatically der that I have at any time considered any suggestion with reference to the secretaryship of the joint committee." Mr. Guy said that he had every confidence in Mr. Hugo. He did think, though, that Mr. Hugo should have received more assistance from the members of the council. .... «. Mr Hugo, who was present, said that he did not feel disposed to reconsider his action. He did not wish to retract the statements he had made in his letter. . Finally, it was decided to accept Mr. Hugo's resignation, and to ask him to remain in office till the end of the year. The hope was expressed that the new council would ask him to return. . Mr. Hugo said he would carry on till the annual meeting on the instant. , It was decided to circulate a report presented by a sub-committee on the constitution' of the council among the various centres.
