CROQUET.
MOUNT EDEN CLUB. NICHOLSON PAKE LAWTsS. The official opening- of the Mount Eden Croquet 'Cltfb took place yesterday, wben the new lawns on Nicholson Park were used for the first time. The Mayor of Mt. Eden (Mr. E. «. 'Potter) was invited by the clnb to perform the opening ceremony and the official visitors included members of the Mt. Eden Borough Council and the member for the district. Mrs. F. H. Mueller, the president, welcomed the visitors, and stated that the club was greatly indebted to the Borough Council for the excellent condition of the lawns. Mr. G. Li. Taylor, the chairman of the (Parks Committee, shortly outlined the policy of improvements which the coun■cil intended to carry out on Nicholson Park. The croquet lawn had been made the first work, principally on account of the urgent of the ladies of the Croquet Club. The next improvement will be the completion of the children's playing area. He stated that work is now being done in this respect, and the council hoped soon to have a children's playing ground on Nicholson Park similar to the area at Potter's Park, Dominion Road. Mr. J. W. Shackelford also spoke. The Mayor shortly reviewed the steps which had been taken to vest in the borough the area of about eight acres now known as Nicholson {Park. He stated that East Avenue will 'be carried through to the Education Reserve, on which the new training college is being built. He referred to the proposed scheme of improving that reserve, and said the borough would have to continue its work on Nicholson (Park so that the area will ultimately be of groat 'benefit, and a credit to the district. 'He wished the Croquet Club .success, and he had no doubt that the ladies would have many enjoyable games on the new lawns. The Mayor then declared the lawns open for play. Progressive croquet games were indulged in by a large number of players, and I afternoon tea was served by an energetic I committee.
