TROUBLE IN CHINA.
SAILORS' "WAGES TTNFAID. THREAT TO SHELL TOWN. (Received 12.30 p.m.l PEKING, October 16. Advices from Tsing Tao state that the city experienced a night of terror when two gunboats threatened to shell the city after their demand for pay, which is several months in arrears, had only been partly met. It was feared that the sailors under cover of the ships' fire would try to effect a landing and loot the city. The consulates and public buildings were heavily guarded. The military authorities sent an ultimatum to the gunboats to surrender. Negotiations are proceeding.—fA. and N.Z. Cable.)
