BOXING.
PAEROA TOURNAMENT. B. PCRPT CLAIMS A FOUL. (By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.') PAEROA, Tuesday. The second annual boring tournament under the auspices of the Waihi Boxing Association was held at the Gaiety Theatre. Paexoa, this evening. A large crowd attended to witness the ten bouts scheduled. Jim Thorpe (Waihi) was rKerec, his decisions meeting with general approval. The re suits :-—■ Midgetwetghts. —Warne. Waihi f0.12) v. Hayes, Paeroa tu.2) was a. wUUng go. Warne received the decision. Featherweights.—C. Bailey. Paeroa (5.12) v. C. McConnell, Waihi (9.0) : Bailey did most forcing, but lacked judgment, and in the third" round was floored for eight. McConnell was the better tighter, and recpived the verdict. The star featherweight bout was between Jim Coiiedge, Waihi, provincial champion (0.2) and B. Purdy, Auckland (9.4) in six two-minute rounds. The first round wa-s an even so, characterised by considerable clinching. In the second round Colledge did the forcing, but did not connect very often. Purdy hung on and rained down a series of clean blows which had a steadying effect. The third round was fairly even, and Coiiedge made the most of his o)*portunities, but Purdy put up a clean fight. The doting stages of the fourth round ended sensationally by Purdy claiming a foul, alleging his opponent had bitten his ear. On the doctor's examination the foul was dlsa'.lnwer!. Purdy refused to fight on and Coiiedge received the decision. Lightweight Division.—G. Gunn, Paeroa (S.ll) v. J. Trealone, Turua (9.1) : Trealone made the pace In the first two rounds. The second round opened with Trealone still very aggressive, but Gunn held on pme!y and took the punishment well until Trealone landed a punch below the belt, Guun receiving the verdict on the foul. C. Wright, Te Aroha (l<1.0) boxed H. Burt. Kerepeehi (lft.O). The fight was a spirited one throughout and went the full distance, the decision being a draw. Bantams.—X. William?, Paeroa (5.5) v. C. Moralie, Waihi (5.3) : Moralie won throughout, his chief blow being a straight left. The local lad made a good showing, but was outbosed. Moralie received the decision. Welterweights.—The star bout of the evenLng was the welterweight contest fought between Viv. Smith. Paeroa (10.3) and B. Gilbert, Turua (10.10), six twominute rounds. The contest went only three rounds, and was a real good exhibition. Both men took turns at forcing the pace, but Smith's training and ring experience stood to him. With a beautiful straight right to the point in The closing stages of the third round Smith landed a knock-out blow. Smith was also declared the winner of the gold medal presented by Mr. 11. Johnston, of Newmarket, Auckland. A. Shadbolt, Te Aroha (11.4) fought H. McCowatt, Turua (10.5). Shadbolt using a left hook effectively throughout the bout, received the decision by a narrow margin. Catchweight.—A special four two-minute catchweisht bout was fought between S. Wells, Te Aroha (12.5) and S. McCoid, Turua (11,0). The bout was not a very interesting exhibition, but it went the full distance, the referee's verdict being a draw.
