TARANAKI SEATS.

CAMPAIGN LIVENING UP. MR. S. G. SMITH'S CHANCES. ißy Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) HAWERA, this day. The election campaign in Taranaki is now warming up and people are beginning to take an interest in the fight. So far only one Labour candidate has been nominated, and is standing for the Taranaki seat. In the others there is every chance of clear cut contests between Reform and the Nationalists. Mr. S. G. Smith, National candidate for Taranaki, may retain the seat, but on account of vote splitting, consequent upon the entry of Labour, it is recognised that the "fight will be close. Mr. X Masters, Nationalist, Stratford seat, has for his opponent, Mr. E. Walter, chairman of the local County Council, who stands in the Reform interest. Mr. Masters' work for the electorate is generally recognised and he has a large following. His return by a large majority is regarded as certain. In the Egmont electorate Mr. Hawken (Reform), will probably win against Mr. Green (Nationalist). Tn Patea there were at the last election two Reform candidates, with the I result that Mr. Corrigan (Liberal), won I the seat. This time it is a straightj out issue between Mr. Corrigan and Mr. Dickie (Reform). Voting is sure to be close, and the ultimate result is extremely doubtful. It is generally thought that even were Labour candidates nominated for the three remaining seats in the province, it would not affect the issue. NOT SEEKING ELECTION. SIR JAMES CARROLL. (I - Telegraph.—Press Association.) HASTINGS, this day. Sir James Carroll denies a statement ; that he had not yet decided as to whether he would or would not be nominated for the Gisborne seat. He defijnitely announced t.o-day that he will I not seek election to Parliament. ROSKILL ELECTORATE. I MR. HALL SKELTON. i Mr. Hall Skelton addressed a large I and unusually attentive audience at j Epsom Library last night. His address • was punctuated with applause. Only j two questions were asked, and the reso- } lution of thanks and confidence was j' . yed," with only two dissentients.
