TRAMWAY TIME CLOCKS.

PROPOSED STEEL STANDARDS.

IN CENTRE OF TRAM-TRACK.

. A strong protest against the proposal of the Auckland City Tramway authorities to erect in the centre of the tramtracks in the Mount Eden borough, two gteel standards with time clocks affixed, was made' at a meeting of the Mount Eden Council by Mr. D. Eraser last The "standards, which would be set in concrete, would be erected in Mount Eden' Road and in Dominion Road. In addition to the timing clocks, red lamps, similar to those now used on safety zones, would be affixed to the north and' south sides of the standards. The lamps would be kept lighted day and night. At the top of the standards there would be two arms pointing east and west, with powerful electric lights affixed. Ihe tramway authorities would attend to' the lighting of the standards and would accept full responsibility;

The Mayor (Mr. E. H. Potter) pointed out that the erection of the , standards was being made for the personal safety pf the motormen, who were required to leave their cars and register their tfmes. jsy saving time and allowing the irams to run according to timetable, the clocks would benefit the travelling public.

Mr. G. L. Taylor said that the clopks were absolutely essential for the satisfactory" running of the trams. One motprroan had been killed and another seriously injured under the old system of. clocking. Recently the tramway men had taken action and refused to cross the road to register their times. puring the period that times were not clocked the tramway service proved less satisfactory than under the old system. Although an obstruction to traffic, the clocks were essential.

i. Mr. R. McK. Morispn raised the question- of the council's responsibility in the matter.

Alter further consideration the council decided that the application for permission to erect the standards be granted, and that the standards be allowed to remain in the centre of the roadway during the pleasure of the couticil.
