NORFOLK ISLAND CONTROL.
A SUGGESTED COMMISSION. MELBOURNE, September 11. In the House of Eepresentatives, a motion that a Royal Commission should be appointed to visit Norfolk Island to inquire into the position of the island and its inhabitants in relation to Commonwealth control was carried by 30 to 29. The vote went against the Gorernment. The Assistant-Minister (Mr. Marr) said that everything possible had been done for the island. The Commonwealth paid £3500 a year for officers there, and collected nothing in return. There was an advigory council in connection with the administration of the island. The Ministry had decided that its powers should be enlarged to enable it to submit proposals for new ordinances and the amendment of existing ones.— (A. and N.Z. Cable.)
