PREPARATION FOR ELECTIONS. OTTAWA, September 10. The Leader of the Conservative Opposition (Mr. Arthur Meighen) fired the first shot in the general election campaign at Wingham, Ontario. He; announced that a protective tariff was his party's main plank. , Under the present Government's railway policy the Canadian debt had increased by 234,000,000d0l in the last two years. He characterised the pre- • sent Administration as feeble. i Mr. Meighen claimed that owing to ! the Government's tariff policy 500,000 workers had left Canada to secure emI ployment in the United States. I Speaking in reply to Mr. Meighen at •■ Guelph, Ontario, the Prime Minister said ■ I his Government had reduced taxation by • 75 per cent, expenditure by 100,000,000 dollars in four years, and the public debt by 53,000,000 dollars.—(A. and N.Z. and Reuter.) At Bethany, Ontario, again attacking the Australian tariff treaty, Mr. Arthur Meighen (Leader of the Opposition) said that it sacrificed the Canadian farmer ! to gain a market for the Canadian paper I manufacturer.
