RAILWAY FACILITIES.
(To the Editor.! ■ Sir.—The authorities tell us' that they f arc endeavouring to popularise the railways and improve existing facilities, and T doom it my duty to draw attention I to certain inconveniences now existing I which could with but little troublo j ho swept away. One is the refusal of j tin 1 Department to reserve seats after five o'clock in the evening. Recently I met. a lady who arrived from Kotorua at. 4..">S p.m. She desired to go South tbe following day (Sunday) by the Main Trunk express, and we proceeded direct to the booking office, but were met with a refusal—it was after 5 o'clock. It \va? most unreasonable; the staff was on j duty and the lists were in the office, j Another grievance is the cheeked lugpajjo office. Xo one appeal's to know when it is supposed to be open. One J {evening about 6 o'clock I took some 1"£- j I gage to the station but found the office ji-loseil. I was told that the person in ehnryn was away, and no one appeared 'to know exactly when he would return. T was told that T would have to bring the luggage back later: but upon making a somewhat strong protest against such treatment a porter said that he knew where there was a. duplicate key. and lie went over and checked my packages, as a special favour.—T am, etc.. TRAVELLER. — * I
