SAN FRANCISCO, September 3.
A message from Honolulu states that a number of naval vessels conducted an unsuccessful search yesterday for P.N. 9, No. 1, one of the naval aeroplanes which left San Francisco on Monday, in command of Commander Rodgers, in an effort to make a non-stop flight to Honolulu, but which was forced down when within sight of its destination. Not the sightest trace was found.
A later message states that while the search is being continued the hopes that were entertained for the safety of Commander Rodpers and his four mates have been virtually abandoned in official quarters. The search is 'being continued. The visibility is improving.— (A. and N.Z.) FLIGHT OF P.R. 1 STOPPED. (Received 9.30 a.m.) WASHINGTON, September 3.
